on-street car wash
at a traffic junction outside a main auckland attraction, a group of guys would dash towards watever cars stopping at red lights, splash water at them and 'clean' them by wiping off the water......

that is very normal. at least they try to make themselves useful and some of them do offer good service: it is easier to drive when you have a clean windscreen.
.. the alternative to doing this is to live off the unemployment benefits, beg, or worse.
seen that in europe too - and i have respect for these folks- at least they have the dignity to do something with their lives!
some cars r actually clean already n drivers already signalled to 'cleaners' that they dun want the wash..... so some may not find them useful....
with no authorisation or contract for such 'cleaning' service, they might get into trouble one day eg. accidental damage to car....
spoken like a true singaporean. why am i not surprised at your answer?
in any case, i noticed that - in europe at least, such people don't always impose their service and also, you don't need to pay for what you don't want.
their work might not be in a respectable profession, but its better than kneeling before the crowds in public, bowing their head and just living off the charity of people. or robbing. or putting on a con act. (in *asia*, especially the chinese speaking regions, you'd be approached by people who claim that they lost their wallet, need money for accomodation, food, etc.. i find, in comparison, i prefer the car-washes)
